Different Worlds Challenge The Way We See Ourselves

Date: 12/06/2010 | By: Adriana Trecapelli

In our world today there are many cultures that determine who we are and thus it can be said that people from different cultures come from "different worlds". It is evident, that every culture is different and unique in its own way that also determines who a person is and therefore the way they act and perceive things. Within a culture, a person is brought up differently to those around them, and may have different morals and thoughts on many situations. When one is introduced into another culture they are exposed to whole new levels of how people live and their thoughts on many things. It is then that this person undoubtedly begins to question themselves and who they are. Not only this, but it is very difficult for one to accept a whole new way of living from a culture as it is natural for us to interrogate what others do as we come from “different worlds”. Because they have been exposed to something foreign or alien to them, they are seeing different perspectives on things and therefore, it is this that challenges them.

Different Worlds Challenge The Way We See Ourselves.

Our world today has many different cultures, and we are bound to meet someone who has a different culture to ours. It is our human characteristics to compare our own 'world' to the other person's and adapt. We also tend to judge the other's culture, if they do not follow your own traditions and beliefs. We then begin to consider whether our culture is normal, whether it is the 'right' way. Our world has not been able to go past other's worlds tradtions and beliefs. causing wars and destruction. The point is that majority of us believe the way we have grown, what we have learnt and what our traditions are is the right way, and other cultures are wrong. However, the adaptation of different worlds has modernized our society today, with the example of Bride and Prejudice. Through the mixture of Bollywood and Hollywood, our world has been able to see two different cultures without any contradictions. In conclusion, it is up to our ownselves to take the chance in accepting other's cultures and adapt it to ours. This is the challenge many people are struggling with today. We do not need to remove our own culture and beliefs, but we should take the challenge of experiencing another's culture and be happy to adapt it to your own culture. This way, you have a justification of seeing yourself.

Different worlds challenge the way we see ourselves

When we go into different worlds our thoughts are challenged by things we see, the things we hear and other cultural differences. Although we might percieve ourselves and our cultures to be very different we are actually very similar . These similarities are seen in the way we live our lives, our strong bond with our families, our daily routines and perhaps our reaction to what goes on around us. When we look at ourselves we percieve ourselves differently to the way others might see us, as they might question our cultural differences,

Different Worlds Challenge the Way We See Ourselves

There is no doubt that we are unique and different in our own special ways. How we see and 'perceive' ourselves may also differ from how others see and perceive us. However, this plain fact is challenged when we see different culture or 'different worlds'. We suddenly are taken out of our comfort zones of beliefs about ourselves and the culture we are part of and are challenged by what we see before us. When we look at differnet cultures, we have a tendancy to scrutinize what they consider the norm in terms of traditions and way of life and continue with our own traditions. But, there is no denying that by seeing how different cultures live and interact, it makes us question whether our cultures and the way we live is what everyone else in our 'world' considers the norm. It makes us think about whether us being unique and different and therefore the way that people perceive us is 'correct' and whether what we hold as culture is 'acceptable' in our westernized world today. If it is not, then we feel a need to change these aspects of ourselves and therefore altering our culture. This in turn could come back to haunt us as we see how these other worlds are so accepting of their culture, yet we are so driven by the need to change and alter our own.

Different worlds challenge the way we see ourselves.

When we look at different cultures and different ways of seeing the world we compare these cultures to our own way of life. We ask ourselves if their way of thinking is more sophisticated than our own, if they have any traditions or way of living that we could perhaps adapt into our own lives. When looking at different cultures we question our own culture and compare, in our own way judging the cultures. In this way when we view different worlds we challenge ourselves and way of life to see if we live up to, not only our own expectations, but everybodies.
